Two of my books were included in the Beyond Reading: Books As Art Exhibit at the Suffolk Museum in Suffolk, Virginia. Unknown Ancestry and Miller Pottery Since 1865 were among 70 books from book artists in the U.S. and Canada. The exhibit runs from April 25 - June 7.

"At a Glance" - By: Mark St. John Erickson - May 11 2008
A book is just a book is just a book; if you think about it like most people. Read a little more into these contemporary sculptures.

"Suffolk flips for books" - By: Tracy Agnew - April 19, 2008
Some have words, and some don't. Some resemble conventional books, but most don't. The common thread is that all the books in the "Beyond Reading: Books as Art" exhibit at the Suffolk Museum are handmade.
Forty artists from all over the country submitted works for the exhibit. The Suffolk Museum exhibit runs in conjunction with "The Art of Printmaking" at the Red Thread Studio and "Letter Carriers: The Written Word in Art" at Shooting Star Gallery.

Amy, is this a new question in the book world? I find interesting parallels in the great debate of whether quilts are art or craft. I think that both are valid views, without the finely honed craft there would be no art.
Hi Pam,
It seems to me that a lot of book artists that I have been around reject the title of artist in favor of artisan and would rather be complimented on craftsmanship than artistique quality. I tend to feel that way. (It could be just my experience though - the UA MFA in Book Arts is very craftsmanship oriented) I definitely don't see the two as mutually exclusive, by any means. For me, a good artist's book combines both elements. There are definitely artists' books that seem to be more at home with sculpture than traditionally bond books. All in all though, I avoid the "debate" b/c I'd rather spend that time making a book! :)
Your quilts definitely combine art and craft!
