Hey Amy,

Beautiful book! I am enjoying reading through your blog and starting to understand the "process" a little. How much time, in general, does it take for you to do the physical assembly of the book?

Hi Pam,
Thanks for your feedback! I hope after this week I will be posting more regularly! :)

Ok, Time...
Hmmm...let's see. It really depends on the project. If I don't take into account the time that I spend in computer layout/design and printing then probably 3 - 5 hours for physical assembly of a book like "Unknown Ancestry". It's hard to estimate b/c some of the steps take 24 hours of drying time or staying under weight. For example, with "Unknown Ancestry" the covers needed to stay under weight for 24 hours before I attached them to the text block. Then once all the cutting and sewing of the text block was finished, I attached the text block to covers and then the book stayed under weight for another 24 hours. Some of this extra time is due to the type of board covering that I am doing. I am using printed faux vellum as my front and back covers, I came up with the process about a year ago and have been tweeking it every time I make a new book - trying to improve my process and the finished product. The sewing for "Unknown Ancestry" is simple b/c it's a single section book so that doesn't take a lot of time. But the physical design - figuring out dimensions, measuring all the materials and trimming everything to size takes time. It varies a lot from one binding style to the next - a cased-in binding would take more time b/c there are a lot more steps in the binding process.

I hope that answers your question. I realize in trying to answer it that I don't really know how much time I spend on it...Once I start working, I usually am so zoned into what I'm doing that hours pass without me noticing. :)

Thanks for your interest!
